Amsaga – Alexander and Amanda!

About
“The making of BUDŌ” is an exhibition by creative duo Alexander Toma and Amanda Aagard, also known as AMSAGA. “BUDŌ” is an animated stop-motion short film about a lonely widow who finds comfort in the company of a hungry stray cat, which soon takes over her life in unimaginable ways.

Welcome to a glimpse into the miniature world of a stop-motion production! Everything (99%) of what you see on display is made by hand. The exhibition includes sets, props, dolls, behind the scenes stills of production and of course, the short film.

The world of “BUDŌ” is set in a picturesque suburb on the outskirts of Tokyo. As the covid pandemic broke out and the Swedish film industry was put on hold Amanda Aagard started to build miniatures of Tokyo as a creative output. The inspiration and research for the project’s worldbuilding is based on photographs by Amanda Aagard who has lived in Tokyo, and endless hours on Google Maps. Inspired by the builds Alexander Toma wrote a short film script set in this Japanese world and so, “BUDŌ” was born.

The short film is co-produced by Film i Väst with financial support from the Swedish Film Institute, Hey, It’s Enrico Pallazzo!, FilmCloud and the City of Gothenburg. “BUDŌ” had its national premiere during the 47th Göteborg Film Festival and its international premiere at Tribeca Festival, where it also received a Special Jury Mention. Since then the short film has (or will soon have) been screened at festivals in Norway, Brazil, Australia, Japan and the US (Los Angeles, Atlanta, Oklahoma).

If you don’t have time to see the short fifilm here, you can also watch it from the comfort of your own couch at Draken Film. Enjoy!
