National Short Film Competition

This year’s films have been chosen for their exceptional narrative power, technical brilliance, and unique artistic visions. The selection highlights the incredible diversity of the craft, showcasing the voices that are currently defining the future of Swedish animation.

The films in the National Short Film Competition are competing for two main honors:

Best Film
The winner is awarded a digital distribution deal by Svensk Kortfilm c/o Folkets Bio. This prize grants the film online distribution alongside Folkets Bio’s curated selection of world-class cinema on the premier streaming service Draken Film.

Winner of Best Film 2026: “The Undying Pain of Existence” by Oscar Jacobson.
The jury’s motivation: With surgical precision and storytelling where not a single frame is wasted, the mundane is transformed into a vibrant narrative. The animation is of the highest caliber, playfully and delightfully blending various styles into a polished whole. Through tight editing and a spot-on dramaturgical payoff, the film manages to elevate a small impulse into something grand, while simultaneously capturing the ironic pain that arises from pure existence. It is a solid piece of craftsmanship, showing an incredible finesse for sound, movement, and character that impresses us deeply.

The winner will also be presented with an exclusive, hand-sculpted wooden statuette by artist Wilma Harju. Commissioned as the 2026 Festival Artist, Harju has created a bespoke piece that serves as a tangible celebration of artistic excellence, making this one-of-a-kind sculpture a prestigious mark of achievement.

Winner of the jury’s Special Mention 2026: “Dream about fish” by Alma Lefverström.
The jury’s motivation: A smart and creative film that, through humor and finesse, manages to make weighty themes accessible. The filmmaker showcases a unique voice and an impressive ability to balance the abstract with the human. Through subtle and artistic storytelling, the filmmaker proves that even something painful can become beautiful and light as a feather in the right hands. A promising talent with a natural knack for storytelling, of whom we look forward to seeing much more in the future.

The Trollywood Jury Award
Presented by the festival, this award recognizes a film that demonstrates outstanding creativity, technical mastery, or a particularly innovative approach to the medium of animation.

Winner of The Trollywood Jury Award 2026: “Ovary-Acting” by Ida Melum.
The jury’s motivation: With a brilliant mix of humor, song, and sharp craftsmanship, this film manages to navigate its subject matter in a nuanced way. We are captivated by its charm from the very first frame, which is filled with impressive detail. To successfully pull off such an extensive production is an admirable feat. We wish to celebrate this film as a brilliant ambassador for the immense power of animation.
